Right to Food London
Hunger is a Political Choice
Two million Londoners – 400,000 children and a quarter of pensioners - already can’t afford sufficient food. We now face terrifying fuel costs and levels of debt. In 2020/21, around 421,000 Londoners relied on the good work of volunteers at food banks, charities, faith groups and other community groups for food. Record numbers of people live in poverty after years of austerity cuts and stagnating wages and benefits.
Enough is Enough. Londoners need the #RightToFood.
Cost-benefit analysis of UFSMs show reduced costs to health systems and increased benefits for economic growth. This means the absence of a right to food for all children at present is the result not of practical decisions but of the ideology and political will of those in power.
Demands
We want London to become a #RighToFood city. We must stop hunger and malnutrition in our communities! So, we need YOU to get active in your boroughs.
We align with Ian Byrne's national RTF campaign. Our focus is on London and boroughwide planning and action to feed ALL in need by campaigning for:
Universal free school meals for all primary and secondary children.
Establishing a network of community kitchens, including allowing us to use our school kitchens.
Open access to emergency food centres (food banks) by ending the referral system and means testing.
Strategic use of urban public land to ‘farm the city’.
National nutritional standards for all emergency food centres and free & affordable food hubs.
Nationally agreed working conditions for all food project workers, whether paid or unpaid (voluntary).
Standing with trade unions and marginalised groups fighting for real living incomes via wage packets or benefits.
